“ ベトナム戦争から家に帰る前夜、青年兵士は自宅に電話した。
「明日帰るんだけど、他に行くところがない友達を連れて帰りたいんだ。
　 家で一緒に住んでもいいかな？」
息子の帰還報告に狂喜した両親は、勿論！と泣きながら答えた。

「でも、一つだけ言っておきたいことがあるんだ。
　 彼は地雷を踏んでね、腕と足を失ってしまったんだよ。
　 でも、僕は彼を家に連れて帰りたいんだ。」
その台詞に、両親は押し黙ってしまった。

「数日ならいいけれど、障害者の世話は大変よ。
　 家にいる間に、そのお友達が住める所を一緒に探しましょう。
　 あなたにも私たちにも自分達の人生があるのだから、
　 そのお友達 の世話に一生縛られるなんて無理よ。」
やっとのことで母親がそれだけ言うと、息子は黙って電話を切った。

翌日、警察から電話があり、青年兵士の両親は
彼がビルの屋上から飛び降りて死んだことを知らされた。

死体と対面した両親は絶句し、泣き崩れた。
