一介の修道士にすぎないルターが、なぜカトリック教会と皇帝カール５世の連合という巨大な敵に挑戦できたのか。

決定的なことは、ルターが「情報革命」の中心にいたという事実だろう。

　カトリック教会が異端との戦いにおいてつねに勝利をおさめてきたのは、挑戦者よりもはるかにすぐれたコミュニケーション・ネットワーク、すなわち、ラテン語という共通語と、全ヨーロッパに張りめぐらされた教会組織を持っていたためである。しかし『論題』発表の70年ほど前、グーテンベルクが発明した活版印刷術が、状況をまったく変えてしまっていた。

百戦錬磨のカトリック教会も、「出版」という新たな分野では防戦一方だった。ルターらプロテスタント側が俗語（英語、ドイツ語、フランス語など）を用いる圧倒的多数の読者をターゲットとしたのに対し、カトリック側はごく少数の知識人にしか読めないラテン語にこだわったのだから、それも当然であろう。当時のカトリック側がどんな心理状態だったかは、1535年、パニックにおちいったフランス王フランソワ１世が、すべての本の出版を禁止したことによくあらわれている（実現不可能だったことはいうまでもない）。
