　日本人、ことに知識階級の人々の中には、とかく同胞人の業績に対して、その短所のみを拡大し、外国人のものに対しては、その長所のみを強調したがるような傾向を持つものがないとは言われない。そうして、かなりつまらない西洋の新しいものをひどく感嘆し崇拝して、それと同じあるいはずっとすぐれたものが、ずっと古くから日本にあっても、それは問題にしないような例は往々ある。
