ある日、マタギのところへ動物愛護団体の人が名刺を出して
「なんで熊を殺すのですか」と抗議にきたそうな。
マタギの爺さん曰く「生きていく糧と伝統」と説明するも、
愛護団体側は「動物を殺すなんて（以下略）」と聞く耳を持たない。
それから連日抗議に来るので、煩わしく思ったマタギは
知人に頼んで一芝居をうつことにした。

今日も今日とでマタギに難癖を付けにやってきた団体様。
そのタイミングを見計らい、近所の知人がやってきて
「里に熊が出てきた様だ、心配だなー」と一言。
それを聞いて青ざめたのは団体の連中。
どうやらマタギをこらしめに来たはいいが、
熊に襲われることは想定してなかったようだ。
恐怖を感じた団体の連中は、マタギの爺さんに
「私が熊に会っても・・・安全に帰れますでしょうか？」
と振るえながら尋ねる始末。
そんな情け無い連中に、マタギの爺さんはこう返してやった。

「熊に遭ったら、あんたの名刺を見せればいいじゃないか。
　動物愛護団体だとわかれば熊も襲ってこないだろう？
　 襲われてもそれはそれで、愛すべき動物の糧になれるんだから
　名誉なことじゃないか。
　それとも、まさかあんたら俺を警護につけて、
　 『私達の安全のために、熊が襲ってきたら撃ち殺してください』
　 なんて言うつもりじゃねぇよな？」
