軍の研究者によると、異常を発見する能力が特に高い兵士には二つのタイプがあるという。一方は狩猟の経験があり、子供の頃から弾に当たった獲物を探して歩いたことのある者。もう一方は都会で、どのギャングがどのエリアを仕切っているか知っておく必要があるような、危険な繁華街で育った者である。

このどちらのタイプにも当てはまらない者は、その多くが郊外の町で育ったゲーム好きで、両目の視力が1.0であっても、他の人のように奥行きを知覚する力や、周辺の物を視認する力に欠けている。
